I agree that man graduate students do not know statistics very well. And I am one of those students. My last math class was my Freshman year and I took College Algebra. I do not have the slightest clue about statistics and how they work or how you understand them. In my research methods class, Dr. Jim Ave provided some information regarding statistics; however, because it was only a research methods class I did not have to learn the importance of statistics or how to calculate them. When reading the information provided and looking at the links, I was already lost. I can only hope that I will not have to use statistics for the remainder of my Master's Degree.
Personal Web Site has some pro in that it allows employers and possibly other individuals to get a sense of who we are. In a personal web site, it allows the individual to post their thoughts on certain topics such as rehabilitation, evaluation, emergency management ect. However, the personal web site only puts information that the creator wants on it. There may be some misinterpret information or qualifications.
LinkedIn is a good site for an employer or other individuals to see all that you have accomplished educationally and even some of your qualifications. It does not provide a good sense of who you are as a person due to the lack of a blog. I do find that this site seems more professional. I have never heard of Professional Networking Strategies nor am I totally convinced it is necessary. I understand the purpose of LinkedIn and it seems convenient especially when the future employer looks for writing examples. However, I do not think it is necessary. There is nothing wrong with a paper copy, but I was also raised in the country where life is simple and people around here like to stay away from the computers because they do not trust them and they cause more trouble than good. Also my current employer has a folder with my name on it and everything I have every completed or had to turn in for the State. Including my resume.
On a personal note I love wikepedia; however, I am also very cautious as to the information I retain from such a website. When just looking for basic information, non professional related, sure I use it all the time as a starting point. I then expand my knowledge using other credible cites. Sometimes I do the same with athletic training issues; however, this is very rare.
As far as using Wiki as an education tool, it could be useful. When I was in undergraduate we obviously would do poster projects, PowerPoint projects, ect. but we were all on campus everyday of the week so it was easy to meet up. However for online classes such as this Master's Degree program or even online undergraduate program I believe Wiki would be an awesome tool. Many people do choose to take online class due to time restraint and even the inability to drive to campus on a regular basis. This is were a group project, using a wiki site, would be extremely helpful and appropriate! Apps have a wide variety of use. When I was going through anatomy and physiology I & II, I found an app to learn the skeletal system. It would put a pin on a certain bone and you had to guess it. It would also do it in the reverse fashion where it would say a bone and you had to put the pin in the correct spot. You were also playing against a running clock and you received points for quickness and accuracy. I do not recall that particulars apps name but some other A&P apps that I have used in the past are IMAIOS e-Anatomy, Grays Anatomy Student Edition, and Human Anatomy!.
As far as apps are concerned I feel that the sky is the limit. It seems like there is an app for everything now a days. And I also believe that apps could be an awesome tool in education especially if it was fun. I am not sure the extent to which these apps work but if some how the teacher was able to see which student logged in to these apps and see each students progress or to just even see if the students are participating in such activities could be very beneficial. One of the things I found interesting on the top 100 tools for learning was the Whatsapp. I have never used this app as an education tool but I have family who lives in a 3rd world country and this is how they communicate with use. Me and all my cousins are in a group like text message and we call text each other and keep up with one another through this app.
Something else that suprised me was that 5 social media sites are ranked higher than Word. Obviously Word has a significant place in education because of all the papers that are required from students. However, it seems that Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Blogger are used more. I do not consider myself technology inclined; however, I know my way around the internet and social media. Some of the tools listed I have never heard of before. If I had to guess I have only heard about 1/3 of the whole list. This makes me feel even less technology inclined. |
