I played with Pho.to. This is my sister. I am pretty sure she would kill me if she saw this :)
This was taken this year at the North Carolina BalloonFest. You can follow me on Instagram at gabbussell22.
I decided to use Scoop It! There is no particular reason I used this PLN versus the others. It seems interesting. Being able to "scoop" certain articles and posting to my page is awesome. It reminds me of Pinterest but instead of pinning pictures and recipes, you scoop articles of interest. This is a great way of sharing articles and would be an awesome resource when you can connect with other athletic trainers and share articles. Not necessarily newspaper articles but also journal articles.
When learning new things, outside of the classroom, I usually go to the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) website, specifically the journals. This is part of the new Evidence Based Practice (EBP) that us Athletic Trainers are practicing. I also use Google. When knowing what to look for it can be helpful.
As far as following anyone, I use Twitter to keep up with updates on a daily bases. Usually I just like to look at the injurypicpage, to look at injuries other athletes suffer. But as far as information is concerned I follow NATA, Brain Injury Assn, TSSAA, Am J Sports Med, AOSSM, ATSHC Journal, SEATA, NATA Foundation, Concussion Wise, and CNN Health to name a few. The internet helps me learn when I am willing to learn. When I am just trying to pass time then obviously I am not paying close enough attention to actually learn anything. Good learning to me is reading journal articles. Bad learning is reading to news, usually they only provide half of the information. I like technology and learning. Obviously this online degree program is great!!! I live in Tennessee but yet I am able to earn a Masters Degree without ever stepping foot in a classroom. I do feel that the online atmosphere makes learning less personal. Not necessarily between the teacher and students but between the students themselves. In a classroom we see each other every day and make friendships over the course of a semester. However, online friendships aren't usually made due to the lack of weekly in person interaction. My sweet spots in my career would have to be the creativity portion. I feel the most joy when my hospital has to make fliers for our coaching staff, and I am apart of that. Our hospital also has a pumpkin craving/decorating contest and education board and i always participate in those activities because I love to make things look pretty and organized.
Something that is definitely not a strength is presentations. I cannot give a presentation to save my life. I am okay when it comes to making the PowerPoint, but having to stand up and speak is terrible. My throat starts to close and then I sound like I am crying, its humiliating! So when we have presentations for our coaching staff about heat illness and concussions, I have opted to help with the organization portion and leave the presentation to my fellow athletic trainers in the hospital. Students love to mircoblog, including high school and college students. As far as an educational stand point, mircoblogging could have some benefits such as reminders and announcements and such. Especially in high school this could be beneficial to parents to see what is going on with class.
Working with the athletic teams and following/friending our athletic programs is awesome. Our football team has a twitter and facebook and they post/tweet about player of the week, games changes, events, ect on social media that way the whole town knows what is going on. Even during off season they take pictures of the kids working out, doing lift-a-thons, and events. This is one way for coaches to connect with the athletes in their own way. Obviously there are some legal concerns but for the most part I think the kids enjoy it. When looking at other educators page, they all seemed well put together. This is probably because this is a class with formats and rubrics, ect. Anyways I like Sharon Moore-Pulsifer. Her page was easy to navigate and constructed well. Adding more pictures could have helped brighten her page. I believe her page represented both professional and personal. Professional in that she included resumes, and article regards the Concepts 2 Rower but she also included pictures of her family. As far as changing anything, I am not sure exactly what I would change. Obviously there is a rubric to be followed but I would try to incorporate more pictures and pleasing to the viewer.
