During my undergraduate career we did not use social media in any of my course work. As an athletic training student we actually were told to be aware of the pictures we posted on Facebook because it reflected the Athletic Training Education Program and MTSU. I honestly thought they were being over dramatic but they were right, and it prepared me for my job.
I can see where social networking in education could be a useful supplement; however, that is all it would be is a supplement. When strolling through social media, I often just look at pictures, updates, videos, some articles, ect. But from an educational standpoint, I seriously doubt I would stop and read an article that my teacher posted unless it was required. Adding social media discussions on top of reading assignments, homework, projects, could become a hassle. It just another thing us students would have to check to make sure all assignments are being completed.
